Improving hearing

Background

Our sense of hearing is not as good as most animals. However, we can enhance our hearing. A good example is the stethoscope. 

Aim

Recognise that it is possible to enhance hearing. 

Activities

Ask your friend to whisper at a distance. Make some trumpet like ears from chart paper and fix it to your ears. Does your hearing improve? Do bigger ear lobes help in hearing better?

Put a watch on the desk in front of you. Can you hear it? Hold a ruler (scale) so that one end touches the watch and the other end rests against your ear. Can you hear the watch? When is it easier to hear the watch? Replace the ruler with a metal ruler of the same length. Does it make a difference?
