Environmental Studies
The curricular focus of Environmental Studies at the primary level is to expose children to the world around them. A foundation to analytical abilities is laid here by encouraging children to interact with various elements of their environment, observe them and discover cause-effect relationships.
Mathematics
Mathematics: a set of rules (axioms and theorems), is essentially a thinking tool that can promote problem solving. While introducing children to numbers, number operations, shapes and patterns, the purpose is to initiate children to consider “what if” situations and to use mathematical tools to explore the consequences of these situations.
Language
The primary years are highly language centred years for children. They come to school equipped with certain language skills – skills that they have picked up from their families and neighbourhood. It is now the language teacher’s task to build upon these skills and help children use language effectively for communication and comprehension.
What is to become of these children? It is too early to even guess. But children certainly look forward to life. To speak about the wonders of life; to express their joys, excitements and frustrations they need to use words and language. Equipped already with functional native language skills, these are the years of rapid vocabulary building and a period of transition from using phrases to using complete sentences for expression. Every child has a natural instinct to observe other people’s talk and to imitate them. The primary school’s language programme is to strengthen this natural urge and to embark on a systematic usage of language.
Resource Persons
Resource persons or institutions can be helpful in enriching our knowledge and skills. They can also be helpful in providing additional inputs to our classrooms. Specialist persons or organisations (e.g., doctors) can be useful in solving specific problems or providing specific support.
